My activity in the Parliament

I belong to the largest political group in the European Parliament, i.e. the European People’s Party (EPP), which has 183 deputies over a total of 720. As representative of the South Tyrolean People’s Party (SVP) within the EPP, I work in both the Italian and the Austrian delegation. At the last European elections I got over 80.000 preference votes, thanks to the support of the people of South Tyrol, Trentino and of the Belluno and Friuli areas.

Member of committees and delegations

EPP Coordinator within the Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development:
This is one the most important and renowned committees of the European Parliament. It deals with matters accounting for around 37% of the community funds and its decisions directly affect the lives of EU citizens. The committee's original aim was to support food production in the aftermath of the Second World War. Today, following the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon, the Committee on Agriculture has acquired a strategic role within the European Union.
As a member of this committee, I contribute to the drafting of legislative texts. At the moment, we are working on the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) as part of the EU’s next multiannual financial framework (MFF) for the period 2028–2034. The aim is to set out a range of measures to assist European farmers, sustaining agricultural productivity and protecting employment. Supporting small agricultural enterprises is not only important from an economic point of view, but it is also fundamental to preserve the quality of life in peripheral areas and to protect biodiversity, particularly in mountainous areas. It should be noted that 12-13% of the earth’s land area is used for agricultural purposes, thus providing humanity’s staple foodstuffs. In addition, the committee also deals with matters related to food quality and consumer protection. In this regard, the recent intensification of controls and the introduction of new standards have already led to an improvement in food quality. The AGRI committee strives also to protect the agricultural sector from the consequences of the economic and financial crisis, by securing jobs and ensuring fair prices.
